The Happy Camp/Slater Fire Slows Now 22% Contained

The Happy Camp/Slater Fire slows considerably and according to the latest information released Monday evening just before 9:30pm, the blaze added less than 100 acres on Monday, bringing the total acres burned to 148,677 acres as fire crews gained 22% containment.

The latest Monday evening report showed no growth in the Devil Fire with containment remaining at 18%.

This slowed fire activity allowed the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office to reduce Evacuation Levels to LEVEL 1 “BE READY” for ALL residences located on US Hwy 199 from the Cave Junction City Limits to the Rough and Ready State Park to the south, including Westside Road to the west and Caves Hwy 46 to Chapman Creek Rd to the east as well as Holland Loop Rd. to the Hayes Cut-Off Rd.

Fire crews continue to utilize direct and indirect attacks to tie in fire activity west of Hwy 199 and secure firelines from Hwy. 199 into Illinois Valley along the northwest flank of the fire. Crews continue to maintain a presence and complete additional assessment of structures within communities north of the fire area and are also implementing structure protection plans amongst structures and communities. Tactical firing and blacklining is being implemented in the Knopki Cr. areas west of Hwy. 199, and areas South of Holland Loop along Althouse Cr Rd.

Mop-up and patrols in and around the threatened communities of Happy Camp, Indian Creek, continue with direct line construction and prep roads above Thompson Creek heading north, aerial ignition of indirect sections above Thompson Creek.

(North Dakota Task Force 1 completed necessary preparations to protect the Oregon Caves National monument by installing sprinklers, hose lines and portable water tanks.)

U.S. Highway 199 continues to remain open to two-way through traffic in both California and Oregon. Drivers are reminded to use caution and slow for fire crews maintenance crews and law-enforcement and to be prepared for possible delays as fire conditions are everchanging.
