Azalea Girls Basketball takes on Marshfield

The Azalea girls basketball team was home Wednesday evening, hosting Marshfield who traveled from Coos Bay to take on the Bruin girls.

Marshfield started the first period setting a fast pace with a full court press that had the game running from end to end as both teams fought to establish an early lead. Marshfield took advantage of early opportunities taking a 2-6 lead early before stretching that lead to 8 taking a 4-12 lead after the first period.

The Bruin girls struggled with Marshfield’s full court press which forced Azalea turnovers, creating fast break opportunities and quick points, however, the Azalea girls fought through the pressure to keep pace with Marshfield. Marshfield continued to take advantage of scoring opportunities to take an 11-20 lead into the half.

Trailing by 9 to start the second half of play, the Bruin girls adjusted their gameplan during the break, and applied a suffocating full press of their own, forcing Marshfield to make mistakes and miscues that created scoring opportunities for the Azalea girls, allowing them to start to close the gap. Shots began to fall and the Bruin girls defense held Marshfield to just 8 points in the period, as the Bruin girls hit a 3 point shot to end the third period trailing by just 3 points, 25-28.

In the fourth period, the Bruin girls shooting went cold as Marshfield applied the pressure forcing Bruin girls turnovers and missed shots that allowed Marshfield to extend a lead and finish the game with the win.
