With winter sports programs now entering its final weeks, another outstanding Brookings-Harbor High School student athlete has been chosen Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.
This weeks selection, chosen by girls varsity basketball head coach Kara Morris, is sophomore point guard, Sawyer Adams, #10, a two sport varsity athlete who participates on coach Brian Carlson’s girls varsity soccer team in the fall.
As a two sport varsity athlete, this weeks selection is another great example representing the attributes of the ‘Star Student Athlete’ program and was chosen by coach Miller for her “relentless hard work and her high basketball IQ.” coach Miller said.
While playing two varsity sports and carrying multiple college level classes, Sawyer has maintained a cumulative 4.0 GPA carrying courses including Biology, Stress Relief PE, Algebra II, Honors Language Arts II, Leadership, Global Studies, and Spanish II as she intends to pursue a degree in medical imaging.
Community service is another important quality in the selection of the Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’ and Sawyer enjoys working with young athletes and coaches kindergarten sports, is active in her church, and is involved in Leadership at school.
Only a sophomore, “Sawyer has been a varsity starter for the past two years” coach Morris said. “Sawyer’s best qualities are the intangibles that don’t show up on the stat sheet, using her fierce competitiveness as the teams primary ball handler to lead her team in assists per game, is third on team in rebounds averaging 5.2 per game while leading the team in 3 point percentage and averaging 7.5 points per game herself”
