With the winter holiday break and winter preseason tournaments in the rear view mirror, winter prep sports programs are in full swing as the Bruin girls varsity basketball team hosted the Marshfield Lady Pirates Monday evening with regular league play beginning next Tuesday.

The Lady Pirates came into Monday evenings game with a 3-6 preseason record looking to challenge the 6-5 Bruin girls, the Bruin girls wore Marshfield out from the beginning using a full court press to create chaos and tempo.

In a first period of chaos, the Bruin girls found the basket for 4 points midway through the first period, but it was the press that frustrated the Lady Pirates, trapping them in their own half of the court and intercepting desperate attempts to escape the press.

The Bruin girls managed a 9-3 lead to end the first period as both teams missed multiple scoring opportunities.

But the first period was a prelude to the Bruin girls suffocating press, that would not allow another Lady Pirate basket in the first half of play. In the second period the defense continued to demoralize Marshfield, and the Bruin girls started to hit their shots, extending their lead to 25-3 before the half-time break.

The Bruin girls would add 6 more points to start the third period while holding the Lady Pirates scoreless, but Marshfield would find the basket in the second half of the third as the Bruin girls extended their lead 37-6 after the third period.

The fourth period was back and fourth with scrappy defense creating turnovers and break away baskets. The Lady Pirates found the basket for 5 more points, making the final score,45-11.

The Bruin girls will be on the road Wednesday, traveling to Coquille to take on the 7-3 Lady Red Devils with tip-off scheduled for 5:30pm in the final preseason game before league play begins next Tuesday.
