Bruin Girls Soccer Opens Regular Season Play Taking Out Cascade Christian

Brookings-Harbor girls varsity soccer and head coach Brian Carlson started league play at home Tuesday afternoon, taking on the Cascade Christian Lady Challengers..

The Bruin girls, coming off a decisive win over Marshfield in a pre-season match-up last Thursday, the Bruin girls wasted no time taking control of the game, pressing play into St. Mary’s half of the field.

With play primarily in front of the Lady Crusader’s goal, the Bruin girls would strike first, when sophomore striker, #12, Sawyer Adams found the back of the net from 25ft. out, hitting the top left corner, giving the Bruin girls a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the match.

The Bruin girls were strong defensively, closing down Cascade Christian offensive attacks quickly and starting the Brookings-Harbor offense from the defensive backs and attacking the Cascade Christian defense.

Play would settle into the mid-field for much of the middle of the first half, and Brookings-Harbor girls ball control and defense would tire the the Lady Crusader’s, allowing the Bruin girls to gain a corner kick, that senior midfielder, Avery Hodge would get past the keeper, giving the Bruin girls a 2-0 lead 25:00 minutes into the first half.

With the Lady Challengers fatigued, the Bruin girls attacked, scoring four more goals to close out the first half, after sophomore Gabby Dresen, #6 broke away into the box to score, sophomore #12, Sawyer Adams found the net from outside the box, sophomore forward, Claire Pieper, #3, scored on a fast break, and freshman BrYnn Honeycutt, #2, beat the outside defender down the line to score just before the half.

With a 6-0 lead, the Bruin girls put the game out of reach minutes into the second half, with sophomore forward, Claire Pieper, #3, scoring for the Bruin girls on a shot from inside the box just 3:00 minutes into the second half.

Senior, Lesie Newman would end the game, getting off a shot from outside the penalty box to make the final score 8-0.

The Bruin girls will be on the road this Thursday, continuing league play in Coquille with kick-off scheduled for 5:30pm.
