According to a Curry County Board of Supervisors May 23rd press release, the Deputy Oregon Fire Marshal first made contact with the Brookings Harbor Farmer’ Market on October 1st, 2024, to perform an annual fire inspection of the facility.
At that inspection, several dangerous violations were observed. These included electrical wiring issues, primarily extension cords being used as a substitute for permanent wiring, inadequate access for a commercial structure and lack of proper ventilation for heaters and cooking implements.
The Curry County Building Division was notified of these issues and met on the site with the State Fire Marshal and the owners of the property in February, 2025, to discuss the findings of the State inspection. All necessary corrections to bring the structure into compliance with State Building Code were thoroughly discussed during this visit.
Additionally, the Building Official informed the property owners that the building Division would be to work with the property owners as long as the permitting process was started and good faith efforts were made to achieve code compliance. This offer still stands.
After many subsequent attempts from the Building Division to encourage compliance and numerous conversations both in person, on the phone and through email to help the owner of the building understand the hazards associated with the violations and the process to move forward, a dangerous building tag was posted May 22nd, 2025.
