Very early Friday morning, January 2nd, Newport Police Officers were dispatched to a report of someone pounding on the door of a residence at approximately 12:56am Friday morning.
The resident went to the door and observed a male actively stabbing another male on the residents front porch.
According to the Newport Police press release, the resident went back inside, called 911, and retrieved a handgun before confronting the suspect, later identified as 42 year old Matthew Wonser of Newport, and attempting to get Wonser to stop stabbing the subject.

However, Wonser continued to stab the other male, and the resident ultimately shot Wonser, who later died on scene.
The stabbing victim was transported to the hospital and is in a Portland area hospital in critical condition.
Officers and Deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office arrived and began an investigation, which led to the discovery of 58 year old Newport resident, Robert Peddycoat’s identification in Wonser’s possession.
Peddycoat, who had been staying at a nearby Motel, was found dead in the Motel room from multiple stab wounds after officers entered the room.
The Lincoln County Major Crime Team was activated and are currently investigating. There is no further danger to the public.
