According to a Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office press release, deputies were dispatched early Saturday morning, May 31st., to an “industrial accident” at a landslide area on Highway 36, east of Swimmer’s Delight near the Devil’s Elbow picnic area, that has been active and seen multiple road closures since early March.
Just before 6:00am Saturday morning, deputies responded to the area which involved a significant amount of debris falling from the active landslide, resulting in a tragic fatality.
Subsequently, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Division responded to the scene and following notification of next of kin, the deceased has been identified as 58 year old Rodrigo Reyna-Sanchez, who was working for a local contractor.
As of Sunday morning, June 1st, the slide is still active, and Route 36 remains closed.
