An emergency call from an elderly female was received by Grants Pass 911 on early Wednesday evening, March 4th, reporting that a man had fired a gun in her home, striking his own leg.
Police officers responded to an address on Leonard Road, and due to limited information, one of the officers called the residence subsequently learning that there was another elderly person in the home being held hostage by the man who had shot himself in the leg.
Officers then notified the Grants Pass Crisis Negotiation Team and Special Weapons and Tactics Team to putting them on standby.

The officers on scene helped the elderly female exit the home through the back door as they continued to gather more intelligence about the dynamic scene inside the residence.
As officers were engaged in early planning stages, gun shots were heard from within the residence.
Officers immediately forced entry into the home to rescue the hostage and once inside the home, the suspect was found to have shot himself in the chest. Officers transitioned to lifesaving mode immediately, providing emergency medical care to the suspect.
Other officers helped the elderly male hostage get out of the home safely.
Grants Pass Fire with American Medical Response provided further advanced care and transported the suspect to Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford where the suspect remained in the hospital’s care until Friday, March 13th when he was released from the hospital..
The Grants Pass Police Major Crimes Unit, with the assistance of the Medford Police Department detained the suspect, identified as 51 year old Lee Christopher Davis, and was taken into custody by the Grants Pass Police Major Crimes Unit.
Davis was lodged at the Josephine County Jail on multiple charges including 2 counts of Kidnapping in the First Degree, 2 counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Menacing, Felon in Possession of a Weapon, and 2 counts of Interfering with Making a Report.
