Nine teams made their way to the ‘Crown Jewel’ of track and field facilities in southwestern Oregon as Cascade Christian, Coquille, Douglas, Lakeview, North Valley, Rogue River, South Umpqua, St. Mary’s, Medford joined Brookings-Harbor at Brookings-Harbor High Schools new state of the art SOCOMI Sports Complex for the 3A-SD2 Special District Championships Wednesday and Thursday May 22nd and 23rd.
“District Championships was an amazing event and weather was great to support it.” BHHS Athletic Director told the Compass. “We decided to throw our name in the hat to host in September after the new facility was completed and a lot of people spent many days preparing for this and we are really proud of how it turned out.”
Junior, Owen Strasser finished 15th in the 1500m with a 5:25.46 and also competed in the 3000m, finishing 12th, in a time of 11:49.84.Sophomore Kendall Slater finished 6th in the Triple-jump, jumping 27′ 0″. She also was part of the 6th place 4×100 relay finishing in 57.41 and finished 12th in the Long Jump with a leap of 13′ 3.5″. Junior, Alex Justman finished 6th in the 110m Hurdles with a time of 18.95. Justman also finished the 300m Hurdles in 9th place, with a time of 50.97.Freshman Kiaya Evans qualified for State in both the 100m and 200m setting a personal record in the 100m finishing 1st in a time of 12.67. Kiaya also place 1st in the 200m with time of 26.89. She also finished in third place as part of the girls 4x400m relay team with a time of 4:32.57 Junior, Patrick Hatch, participated in four events, including qualifying for State competition in the Discus after finishing 2nd with a throw of 134′ 3″. He also ran in the 800m finishing 12th in a time of 2:12.92 and also ran the 4x400m relay finishing 6th with the team in 3:51.43 before placing 4th in the Javelin with a throw of 142′ 10″.Junior, Johanna Larson, finished 11th in the High Jump, clearing 4′ 3.25″. She also finished 3rd with the 4x400m Relay in 4:25.63. She also finished 8th in the 300m hurdles in 54.46 before qualifying for State competition in the 400m after finishing 2nd with a season record time of 1:02.67. Sophomore, Owen Austin, finished 11th in the 100m with a time of 12.45, finished 14th in the 200m in 25.75. He also finished 12th in the 400m Hurdles in 59.89 and finished 10th in the 110m Hurdles with a time of 20.46.Senior, Eden Van Maren, finished 9th in the Long Jump leaping a personal record 13″ 11.75″. She also finished 3rd in the Pole Vault clearing 7′ 10.75″, finished 4th in the triple jump in a season record 29″ 3.25″. Freshman Sequoia Merten and Kendall Slater making the exchange in the 4x100m Relay, finishing withViolet Desavedo-Martin, and Raina Harris with a time of 57.41. Freshman, Jacob Devereaux, finished 8th in the Javelin with a personal best throw of 118′ 1″. He also finished 11th in Triple Jump, leaping 31′ 2.75″.Freshman Ella Christensen, finished 7th in the 400m in a personal record 1:07.02. She also placed 12th in the 100m in 14.48 and the 12th in the 200m in 31.33 and also finished 3rd with the 4×400 relay team in 4:25.63.Junior John Devereaux and freshman Jare Velasco-Ramos with the exchange in the 4x100m Relay, finishing with Kevin Hooper and Evan York, placing 5th with a time of 46.98. Junior, Emma Gastonguay finished 12th the 1500m in a personal best time of 6:22.85, freshman Danika Camp finished 10th in a personal best time of 6:36.67 and junior Morgan Ferris finished 16th in another personal best 8:13.87.
Local Brookings boy, Deryk Farmer, was voted meet MVP after setting two school records and taking three individual titles to help lead the Cascade Christian boys to the district title.
“It was a great meet! With SOCOMI, building our new sports facility, it made for a fantastic setting.” BHHS Track coach Jason Fulton said. “Many people in our athletic department, high school and middle school track programs, and others have spent months putting this District Championship together. Everyone who saw or stepped on the track stated how beautiful it looked and comfortable to run on.”
“As coach I really appreciate the effort of all the athletes from all the teams, the effort they put out, and sportsmanship they all showed for each other. There were many tight competitions in the field and on the track. I am very proud of our Bruins. We have had many new and young athletes join us this year. Our coaching staff is so impressed and proud of all of them. We experienced much growth this year. They will continue to grow, so our future looks positive!
