Things Speed up in Week 4 as Flag Football Continues

This week, as in weeks past, the Bruins Football Association continued it’s tradition of having their coach’s share their experiences with the community.

This week we talk with Coach Jonathan Devereaux, who is entering his senior year as a homeschool student and started playing football for Coach Bavaro and the Bruins his sophomore year. Devereaux also played baseball for coach Wallin and ran track with Coach Fulton for the Bruins and helped with youth camps for all three sports.

We asked Coach Devereaux who has inspired his coaching philosophy. “I’ve had a lot of great coaches teach me throughout the years starting with my Dad, Coach Bavaro, Coach White, and so many others, who have taught me to play with passion, intensity and to remember to have fun and lift my teammates up along the way.” he told the Compass.

“How attentive these young players are and how focused they can be at such a young age” has surprised Coach Devereaux the most. “I expected a lot more pushback and distraction, “he continued, “but when we set up a drill they usually settle in energetically and on point.”

My favorite part about coaching has been interacting with the kids. I like to get to know them and see them grow in confidence and have fun while doing it!

We asked Coach Devereaux what he hoped the kids take away from their experience. “Mistakes are going to happen” he said, “and that’s ok, but dwelling on them won’t move you forward. Listen to the criticism, work on the fundamentals, and get back in the game. I hope when they think about this season they remember the fun they had with each other, on the field in practice and in games, and that learning doesn’t have to be a chore.” – Coach Jonathan Devereaux
