Work Begins Replacing Pilings in Harbor Marina Basin

Indications that work is getting serious down in the marina basin as the essential equipment is lowered onto a barge.

Late last week Bergerson Constuction Inc. out of Astoria began work on restoring the recreational portion of the marina.

Stacking the new pilings that will replace the old pilings and anchor the slips.

Beginning late last week, crews first placed all the new anchor pilings on the jetty and then they began assembling a moveable barge in the harbor to hold all their equipment for the job.

Lowering portions into place and assembling an approximately 40 ft. by 100 ft. barge.

Crews then began the task of positioning the barge and crane and removing old pilings.

After leaving only the very essential pilings, crews then began replacing the pilings Tuesday. Surprisingly, the process is very quiet, with no loud and seemingly endless pounding of the new pilings into the marina basin floor.

After reaching out to Bergerson Constuction Inc., President Greg Morrill was kind enough to take the time to explain that the tool used to install the new pilings into the basin floor is a state of the art Hydraulic Vibratory Hammer. This mechanism (similar to the one seen here)…

uses hydraulic clamps to grip the pipe and create a continuous vibration that literally liquefies the material surrounding the piling relieving resistance while pushing the piling into the basin floor. He also noted that this technique is also very environmentally friendly to local marine life that may be in the area by eliminating the loud banging associated with older or different methods used in more solid basin floors.

Bergerson Constuction Inc. estimates the project will be completed in approximately 4 weeks, and before the end of February.
