Adventures with Dave – Chetco River

Recently our intrepid adventurer Dave Lovell took a trip up the Chetco River to a spot known as Elephant Rock, just downstream of Redwood Bar.

It’s a lovely time of year to go before the crowds start showing up. In the winter months, this rock can be totally underwater.

Putting fins and a wet-suit on, Dave went snorkeling to have a look around. This time of year the water is super clear! It was nice to see the local ecology recovering from last year’s fire.

Dave noticed a lot of new growth going on…mainly Alder, and down at the river bank; the giant round leaves of Indian Rhubarb (which is flowering right now.)

Being the consummate outdoors person Dave is, he would like to remind people who visit upriver, or down at the beach, to always pick up any trash they see. It may not seem such a big deal now, but by the end of summer, there can be hot spots of trash left, like at Elephant Rock.

Please take trash home with you if you see it, it really is such a small thing to do.

Love this time of year upriver.

Our local outdoor adventurer Dave Lovell has over 40 years of experience swimming, body-surfing, scuba diving, surfing, windsurfing, and kayaking in both freshwater & saltwater. Look for more from Dave in the future, and let us know if you have an adventure you would like Dave to take on.
