Brookings Man Dies while in Custody at Josephine County Jail

A Brookings man was reportedly taken into custody Thursday, May 2nd, after Grants Pass Police responded to Three Rivers Medical Center early Thursday morning regarding reports a male subject that had allegedly subjected an emergency room nurse to offensive physical conduct by spitting on him while he was attempting to provide care.  

The patient, identified as 32 year old Zachary Clayton Grange Dumont of Brookings, was placed into custody after the nurse wished to press charges and Dumont was lodged at the Josephine County Jail for Physical Harassment and he was being held without bail. 

Early Friday evening, May 3rd, an Adult in Custody was found unresponsive in their single cell at the Josephine County Jail at approximately 5:40pm.  

Medical assistance was rendered until personnel from the Grants Pass Fire Department and AMR arrived and took over attempting life saving measures.

Despite the efforts performed, 32 year old Zachary Dumont, a resident of Brookings, was pronounced deceased.  

Detectives from the Oregon State Police are investigating this incident which includes determining the cause of death.   No further information will be provided by the Sheriff’s Office at this time.
