Forest Service Notice

The latest update from the U.S. Forest Service-Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest on Tuesday, August 22nd, informed the public that as of Tuesday afternoon there were no community meetings scheduled at that time.

After almost 24 hours of cooperative weather conditions consisting of cooler temperatures, fog, higher relative humidity’s and lighter winds, caused minimal fire perimeter growth overnight. Officials expect that current weather patterns will continue through Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning. Crews were able begin and continue to build primary and secondary fire lines along the south and southwestern flanks of the massive blaze between the Chetco River and Carpenterville. They also took the opportunity to assess and work to make structures more defensible in regions ahead of the fire.

Even though the fire remains approximately 2.5 miles northeast of Brookings, the Chetco Bar Incident Management Team in conjunction with the Curry County Sheriff’s Office began the process of allowing the return of residents back to their homes and properties when they reduced the evacuation level from Cape Ferrello Road and Carpenterville Road north to Pistol River and east and west off Carpenterville Road back down to level two. Residents in these areas were asked to be prepared to present picture identification to officials at the two established re-entry points at Carpenterville at Rainbow Rock Road or Pistol River/Hwy 101.

They also reminded citizens that the Red Cross is staffing an emergency evacuation shelter at Riley Creek Elementary in Gold Beach 94350 6th St. Gold Beach, OR. (541)-600-6068. There is no shelter in Brookings.

Officials also took the time to show their appreciation to the citizens of this great community who have shown amazing support and gratitude by bringing donations of food and other items to their base camp. They reminded the community that their efforts are concentrated on fire suppression, making it almost impossible to manage the distribution of the many donations to the crews.

Officials encourage the community to continue their support by concentrating the donations to those who have been displaced by the fire within our communities to the Brookings Harbor Food Bank, at 539-A-Hemlock St in Brookings. 541-469-5808.
