Officer Injured During Arrest of Man with a Machete at Kids Town Park in Crescent City

Officers from the Crescent City Police Department responded to the area of Kids Town Park in Crescent City just after 5:00pm Thursday evening, June 24th, regarding reports of a male subject brandishing a machete.  

Crescent City Police Officers located 33 year old Jamal Lowery in the Kids Town park holding a machete as Officers arrived at the scene. Lowery then attempted to flee and a quick perimeter was established by Officers preventing the individual from returning into the play area.

Several officers attempted de-escalation tactics, however, Lowery refused to listen to verbal commands and was then taken to the ground. Lowery continued to fight with officers as he was being arrested, kicking, punching, and spitting on officers during the encounter, which led to K9 Lt. Kai being deployed for the safety of the officers involved.  

After being bitten by K9 Lt. Kai., Lowery continued to fight with officers who were ultimately able to handcuff Lowery and place him in a patrol vehicle where he then threatened an officer prior to spitting on him and Lt. Kai.

One officer received a laceration to their leg and another officer had a small injury to their shoulder that occurred during the incident. Both officers were able to return to full duty immediately.
Lowery was then lodged in the Del Norte County Jail for violations iincluding Obstructing/Resisting, Resisting by threat or violence, Battery on a Peace Officer, and Interfering with a Police K9.
