Officer Shoots Attacking Dog

Just before 9:00am Saturday morning, December 21st, a Central Point Police officer attempted to make contact with an illegal camp on the Bear Creek Greenway. The officer approached a tent at the location and announced he was law enforcement.

The officer contacted a female who came out of the tent. During the contact it was determined that a male was hiding in the tent with a large dog. The subjects failed to maintain control of the dog which broke through the front of the tent and attacked the officer as he was moving away from the tent. During the incident the officer discharged his service weapon, striking the dog once.

The dog was transported to an emergency veterinarian clinic. The officer was transported to the hospital and received care for his injuries. There were no other involved parties or property injured.

The owners of the dog were issued citations for Maintaining a Dangerous Dog. Jackson County Animal Control was contacted and will take control of the animal when released from the clinic. This case is still under investigation.
