Swat Called in After Shooting and Stand-Off

Grants Pass Police responded to a “shots fired” call Monday afternoon August 17th, according to a Monday press release. Multiple police units responded to the area and established a perimeter around a home where the gun shot came from.

An adult male victim was located nearby and immediately linked to the incident. Due to the severity of the crime, along with an elevated concern for community safety, police units secured a large portion of the area and evacuated several neighboring homes. Although police made several attempts to contact people inside the home, nobody responded.

Shortly thereafter the Grants Pass SWAT Team was activated, surrounded the home and tried several additional times to contact people believed to be inside the home, again with no response.

Several hours after police initially surrounded the home, SWAT deployed OC canisters into the home in an effort to get the people inside the home to peacefully surrender at approximately 5:00pm.

43 year old Ajamu Lee Taylor

Eventually a female exited the home, followed by the male suspect later identified as 43 year old Ajamu Lee Taylor.

Nobody was hurt or injured during the operation, and Mr. Taylor was charged with multiple criminal offenses to include Assault 1 and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. The male victim was treated at Three Rivers Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Anyone with additional information about this ongoing investigation is asked to contact the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety. All media inquiries are asked to contact the Josephine County District Attorney’s Office.
