Three Bruin Track Athletes Shine at the OSAA State Track and Field Championships

BHHS varsity track coach Jason Fulton, had three Bruin track athletes qualify for the OSAA State Track and Field Championships held at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon from Thursday, May 29th, through Saturday, May 31st.

Bruin freshman, Kiaya Evans qualified for the State Track and Field Championships after finishing first in both the 100m and 200m, setting a personal record time of 12.67 at the 3A-SD2 Special District Championships Wednesday and Thursday May 22nd and 23rd.

At the State Track and Field Championships, Evans finished 9th in the state as a freshman, finishing the 100m with a time of 12.96. Evans also qualified for the 200m, also finishing 9th in a personal record 26.46, breaking an eleven year Brookings-Harbor school record in the 200m, making her number one in the 200m in Bruin history.

Junior, Johanna Larson, also qualified for State Track and Field Championships at the 3A-SD2 Special District Championships in the 400m finishing 2nd with a season record time of 1:02.67.

Larson finished sixteenth at the State Track and Field Championships, with a personal best time of 1:02.54.

Rounding out the field for the Bruins was junior, Patrick Hatch, who qualified for the State Track and Field Championships in the Discus at the 3A-SD2 Special District Championships held in Brookings, Thursday May 22nd and 23rd after finishing 2nd with a throw of 134′ 3″.

Hatch finished ninth in the state in the Discus at the State Track and Field Championships, beating his qualifying distance with a throw of 134′ 8″.

“Very proud of these kids, they have all worked so hard.” coach Fulton told the Compass. “Kaiya Evans is .07 seconds away from breaking a 25 year old record in the 100m. Johanna Larson is .02 seconds from being 5th all time for the Bruins in the girls 400m, and Jeff Hatch is 7th all time for the Bruins in the discus..Very proud of the work these kids and coaches Matt Steendahl and Tabby Ruiz put into these three athletes this year!
