Things Get Serious as Flag Football Finishes the Season

As the summer sun sets on another Bruins Football Association Flag Football program, another group has completed a season of flag football, and by the smiles on everyone’s faces, it was another successful season.

Continuing our tradition of asking the coach’s share their experiences with the community, this week we talk with coach of the Broncos, coach Rusty White, in the 3rd to 5th grade division to close out the season

Coach White, who is the owner of First Chapter Coffee House, Fresh Prints of Gold Beach (a screenprinting shop), and Adventure Gold Beach all in Gold Beach, is also going into his 8th season as a coach for head coach Shaun Bavaro’s Bruins football program and is currently the Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator.

We asked coach White, who has coached flag football for 6 years on and off in both Gold Beach and Brookings, what qualities he hoped to bring to his coaching style, “I was fortunate to have excellent coaches and mentors from pee wee all the way through my time playing in college,” he said. “and I think the flag football program should make the sport fun, and make the kids excited to keep playing the sport as they get older.”

“I coached the 3-5 grade Broncos. We had an up and down season, but the thing I loved about this team was they played together and lifted each other up even in the losses. That speaks to the kind of people that they have as role models, so thanks to all the parents for raising a good group of kids.”

With the season coming to an end, we asked what coach White what he enjoyed the most about his experience this year. “The thing I love the most about coaching football is sharing my love of this game with others.” he told the Compass. “There are things that I learned from my time playing football that I still carry with me every day.”

“Just as my previous coaches left with me, I hope when they look back on their time playing football, they realize the game was just a vehicle for teaching the lessons and skills that will help them be successful adults in whatever endeavor they choose to pursue.” – coach Rusty White
