Man Arrested After Setting Vehicle On Fire in Front of the Humboldt County Courthouse in Apparent Protest

According to information provided by the Eureka Police Department, both the Humboldt Bay Fire Department and the Eureka Police Department were dispatched to reports of a vehicle fire on 5th Street in Eureka at approximately 7:50pm.

First responders arrived on scene to find a white sedan burning on the lawn in front of the Humboldt County Courthouse on the 800 block of 5th Street near the Humboldt County Correctional Facility, the Courthouse, and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department.

An elderly man had driven his white 4-door sedan onto the lawn in front of the Courthouse building and lit his vehicle on fire before being arrested immediately. No injuries were reported.

Evidence at the scene showed alleged messages scrawled on the vehicle with some saying “Cops are Killers”, “Nuclear Power Plant Cover up”, “Cops are Bad”, “Stop Abuse on me”. Similar messages were written in chalk on sidewalks around the area as well as hand written pamphlets scattered in the streets.
