On Monday afternoon, September 15th, multiple agencies, including Seal Rock Fire, Central Oregon Coast Fire and Rescue, and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to Thor’s Well, near the base of Cape Perpetua just south of Yachats, regarding an individual who had fallen into the water just after 3:30pm.

Responding units requested response from the United States Coast Guard, Oregon State Police, and the Lincoln County Technical Rescue Team.

After first responding units received conflicting reports as to whether a person had actually fallen in Thor’s Well, authorities quickly determined that the subject was in the water in Thor’s Well.

Due to wave conditions, and the nature of the well, personnel on the ground were unable to perform any recovery efforts.

An MH-65 Dolphin crew from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station North Bend arrived on scene at approximately 4:10pm and after the crew attempted two unsuccessful attempts to recover the subjects body, the U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer was able to recover the deceased subject.

Although how the subject fell into the water is unclear, it was reported by a bystander that the subject had been getting too close to the edge of the well.
