As the 2025/26 fall sports programs begin to enter post season play, a new Barron’s Home Furnishings ‘Star Student Athlete’ has been selected. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.

This weeks selection has participated as three sport varsity athlete in head coach Kieth Wallin’s baseball program as well as head coach Jason Fulton’s varsity track team as well as the BHHS boys varsity football program for two years. Senior, #34, Jonathon Devereaux, has been selected by varsity football head coach, Shaun Bavaro for the impact he leaves on both the Bruins and the Bruins opponents throughout the season.

“When I think about John. I think impact!” coach Bavaro told the Compass. Off the field, Jonathan volunteer’s at ‘Safety City’, and some of our readers may even recognize Jonathan from his Compass feature over the summer as coach of the Eagles in the Brookings Football Association’s NFL Flag Football Program. He also is a youth sports referee as well as a elementary school reading lab volunteer. “He might be quiet, but his actions speak loudly both on and off the field.” coach Bavaro said.

An important part of the Barron’s Star Student Athlete program is scholastic performance, showing leadership, leading by example, competitiveness, and work ethic both in the class room as well as in the community. Jonathan has balanced his athletic participation carrying a 3.78 cumulative GPA carrying courses including Algebra 2 w/integrated Geometry, AP History, AP Literature and Composition, College Writhing Intensive, Dual-Credit Senior Literature Seminar and Chemistry.

Jonathan told the Compass that he is looking into northwestern college programs intending on studying History and Literature to perhaps pursue a teaching career, as well as hopefully continuing to play football at the next level, but has not finalized any decisions at this time.

On the field this year, Jonathan ran for 235 yards on 64 carries and 6 rushing touchdownswhile accumulating 720 total yards on 46 receptions in the Bruins passing game. Defensively, Jonathan racked up 50 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 fumble recoveries, 1 interception and 2 defensive touchdowns.

“He has just scratched the surface of success.” head coach Bavaro said. “The biggest impact John brought to our program is that he is a great teammate and he is a leader of men. In the short couple of years of being in the program, he has made our program better in all phases and we are excited to see where he makes his next impact.” – head coach Shaun Bavaro
Congratulations Jonathan, we are confident that you will continue to be successful in any endeavor you should choose to pursue.
Special thanks to corporate sponsor Barron’s Home Furnishings, who makes this recognition possible through out the year.
