Winter High school sports programs are now early in regular season league play, and our next outstanding Brookings-Harbor High School student athlete has been chosen Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.

This weeks selection, chosen by Bruin Cheerleading coach, Manya Bruce, is Maya McCormick, a sophomore in her second year on the Bruin Cheer squad. After completing cheering through the varsity football season as well as simultaneously participating on the Brookings-Harbor High School Color Guard, Maya and the Bruin Cheer squad are now early in the varsity basketball season.

“We chose Maya because we feel like she always gives her all without any complaints. She is quiet, but she is mighty!” coach Bruce told the Compass.

Maya has also excelled scholastically, balancing her athletic participation while carrying  a 3.71 GPA in courses such as Biology, Geometry, Global Studies, Orchestra, Spanish II, Language Arts II, and Bruin Band, with goals of becoming an architect after college.

Community service is another important quality in the selection of the Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’ and Maya participates in local fundraisers with Rotary Interact.

“Maya is always up and willing to learn something new and adapt to her surroundings.” coach Bruce told the Compass. “Maya was in two different sports during football season” coach Bruce continued, “and showed out every single day. The whole team would agree that we are lucky to have her”.

Congratulations Maya, we are confident that you will continue to excel in any future endeavors you should choose to pursue.

Special thanks to corporate sponsor Barron’s Home Furnishings, who make this recognition possible through out the year.
