Bruin Girls Struggle with Marshfield

Senior right-hander, Addie Westbrook, #27, went 6 and a third, allowing 8 hits.

BHHS varsity girls softball head coach Tony Baron continued to work on fundamentals Tuesday afternoon, hosting another very strong team from up the coast after Marshfield made the trip to the south for the Bruin girls ninth preseason non-league game so far this spring.

A high energy Marshfield program stood in the batters box first as junior right-hander, Emmy Armstrong started in the circle for coach Baron. The Lady Pirates attacked Armstrong’s pitching immediately, racking up seven runs in the top half of the first inning. A shell shocked Bruin girls offense stepped in the box and battled to work a run across the plate and get the Bruin girls on the board.

Sophomore, Sierra Weaver, #25, making the play at 2nd.

Coach Baron sent senior right-hander Addie Westbrook to the circle to start the second to slow down the Lady Pirates, which Westbrook did, holding Marshfield to just one run in the top of the second inning. However, strong Marshfield defense in the bottom half of the inning would hold the Bruin girls offense scoreless to hold on to a 1-7 lead.

Senior, Sahara Sankoh, #14, with the catch in left field.

Westbrook was strong again in the third, working her way out of trouble after Marshfield’s seven run offensive outburst in the first, again holding the Lady Pirates to just one run. But the Bruin girls bats stayed silent in the third, failing to put any more runs on the board to take advantage of the Lady Pirates lack of production to end the third.

Senior, Sienna Petersen, #2, turning the double play at 2nd.

The Bruin girls defense continued to keep Marshfield off the scoreboard in the fourth, allowing only on run in the top of the inning as the Bruin girls offense pushed a run around the bags to match the Lady Pirates in the bottom of the inning, making the score 2-10.

Senior, #5, Ella Reneau, went 1 for 2 with 4 runs in the game.

Westbrook continued to slow the Lady Pirates, keeping the Bruin girls in the game, again holding the Marshfield offense to just one run. But the Bruin girls offense was beginning to find its way filling bases with runners and getting two runs across the plate.

Freshman, Sierra Alcala, #11, making the play at the plate.

But the Lady Pirates put some hits together after seeing Westbrook their third time through the lineup, putting five runs on the board. However, the Bruin girls also strung together multiple hits in the sixth, aggressively moving runners around the diamond in their best inning offensively after scoring six runs.

Junior, Annika Steendahl, #8, with the catch in left field.

Sitting on a comfortable 10-16 lead in the seventh, Marshfield continued to score adding three more runs in the top of the inning, extending their lead to 10-19. The Bruin girls answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, as Marshfield took the 19-11 win.

The Bruin girls will be on the road next Thursday, traveling to Cave Junction to challenge the Illinois Valley Lady Cougars with the first pitch scheduled for 4:00pm.
