Bruin Girls Rally to Take Both Games Against Mazama in Saturday Double-Header

Junior right-hander, Emmy Armstrong, #10, went 12 innings, striking out 9 between both games Saturday afternoon.

The Bruin girls softball team was in action over the weekend, hosting the 6-4 Mazama Lady Vikings, who made the long trip from Klamath Falls for a Saturday afternoon double-header in Brookings.

Early Saturday, coach Tony Baron sent junior right-hander, Emmy Armstrong to face the Lady Vokings, who jumped out to an early 0-4 lead. The Bruin girls failed to get a runner around the bases, giving Mazama a four point headstart to start the afternoon.

Senior, Ella Reneau, #5, with the base hit, went 2 for 3, scoring 5 times with 1 RBI.

But the tables would turn in the top of the second with Armstrong keeping the Lady Vikings off the scoreboard in the second and third innings, allowing the Bruin girls to cut the Mazama lead in half, putting two points on the board over the second and third innings at 2-4 after three innings.

In the fourth, Mazama found their bats, getting two runners on the bases and across the plate to extend their lead to four in the top of the fourth. The Bruin girls failed to answer, leaving the Bruins trailing by four runs going into the fifth.

Senior, Abbie Deshon, #17, squaring up a homerun, went 2 for7, scoring twice with 7 RBI.

The Bruin girls defense and pitcher Emmy Armstrong would answer in the top half of the fifth, coming together to hold the Lady Vikings scoreless in their half of the fifth and sixth innings, leaving the score 6-5 after the Bruin girls pushed three runs across the plate the bottom half of the fifth and sixth innings.

In the top of the seventh, Mazama worked two runs across the plate, extending their lead to three runs going into the Bruins final half inning with an 8-5 lead. But the Bruin girls weren’t done yet, getting one runner across the plate to close the gap to just two with two outs before Bruin girls would a rally for three more runs to walk off with a 9-8 win in the bottom half of the seventh.

Sophomore, #24, Brooke Young, went 2 for 6 with 3 RBI.

It was a different story in the second game of the double-header as the Bruin girls jumped out with an unanswered three runs in the first followed by three more in the second and only one run by the Lady Vikings to establish an early 6-1 lead after two.

The Bruin girls would score in every inning in the late game, leading the entire game as Mazama struggled to stay close as the Bruin girls scored four more times between the third and fifth innings to keep an 11-7 lead into the sixth.

Again the Bruin girls shut down the Lady Vikings offense in the sixth, before adding another four runs in the bottom of the sixth, extending the Bruin girls lead to 14-7 before going into the seventh. After Mazama failed to answer in the top of the seventh, the Bruin girls would go on to take the win and sweep Mazama in the Saturday afternoon double-header.

The Bruin girls will defend their 10-7 overall record Tuesday afternoon as the 13-4 North Valley Lady Knights make the trip from Grants Pass challenge the Bruin girls in Brookings for the first game of a three game series with first pitch set for 4:00pm.
