Animal Abuse Investigation Leads to Arrest After Man Allegedly Kills Pet

A report of Animal Abuse was investigated by the Curry County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, September 28th, after the victim reported that in the early morning hours the week prior, on Thursday September 21st, Erik Harris of Port Orford, approached her while working at Prehistoric Gardens south of Port Orford, about her dog that was barking.

The victim reported to Deputies on Friday, September 29th, that Harris had pushed past her to gain entry into the trailer, and removed the dog so that he could kill it.

Curry County Sheriff’s Deputy’s gathered information throughout the day to corroborate the victim’s description of events before Deputy’s contacted Harris later that evening.

Harris reportedly then took Deputy’s to a location on the property where a shallow grave had been dug, and the remains of the dog were discovered.

Probable cause was developed, and Harris was subsequently arrested for Aggravated Animal Abuse in the 1st Degree and Unlawful Entry into a Motor Vehicle and was transported to the Curry County Jail.

Due to Senate Bill 48 (SB48), Harris was booked and conditionally released from the Curry County Jail before he was able to appear before a Circuit Court Judge. Harris is currently free from custody awaiting a court date without posting bail, demonstrating the Oregon Legislature’s failure to keep local communities safe.
