Azalea Boys Basketball takes 2 of 3 in Comet Classic

On Friday the Azalea Middle School boys basketball team took their show on the road and traveled to Mckinleyville to play in the Comet Classic basketball tournament.

In their first round match-up, the Azalea Bruins ran into a very good Sunny Brae team. The AZ Bruins could only get two players in the scoring column in the first period. Fabian Villa #15 hit a basket and #45 Jake Beaman scored twice as the AZ Bruins could only get 6 points in the period.

Jake Beaman led all scorers in the game with 18 points, #42 Brad Russel and Fabian Villa #15 both hit 3 buckets each for 6 points and Seth Byrd #25 followed with 4 points in the game.

But the Sunny Brae team outscored the AZ Bruins by ten points in the game taking the win 28-38 and sending the Bruins to the consolation round.

But the Bruins weren’t done quite yet. On Saturday the AZ Bruins played St. Bernard’s to start the day. Early in the game the Bruins found their scoring hitting for 25 points in the first quarter and didn’t look back.

The AZ Bruins would go on to win the contest 51-24 and moved on to the next round.

In the Consolation Final the AZ Bruins would match-up against a determined Scotia team. Both teams struggled to get on the scoreboard in the first period. Scotia put up 8 points in the first period. The AZ Bruins fought through the tough Scotia defense matching their 8 points with 8 of their own.

The Bruins turned up the defense in the second period holding Scotia to just 4 points in the period. The AZ Bruin offense found its legs in the second period putting 18 points in the scoring column as the defense held Scotia to 5 points in the quarter.

The AZ Bruins would go on to win the game 48-33 with Jake Beaman led all Bruins scorers with 14 points. Brad Russell #42 hit for 8 points, Seth Broberg hit for 8 points with two 3 pointers and a basket, and Fabian Villa #15 scored 7 points off a 3 pointer and two baskets.
