After an exciting school year, High school sports programs have concluded their 2023 seasons, and with that, the final outstanding Brookings-Harbor High School student athlete of 2023 has been chosen Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.

This weeks selection, chosen by Bruin Track’s head coach, Jason Fulton, is freshman Conrad Watkins. Watkins, a two sport varsity athlete, who participated on head coach John Silveira’s varsity soccer program earlier in the year, also ran the 400m, 800m 1500, High Jump, and the 4 x 400 for the Bruins varsity track team this season, and was chosen by head coach Jason Fulton for his remarkable hard work, growth and dedication to his sport, which earned him a very impressive 12th in the State in the 1500m.

“Coming to the Brookings-Harbor High School team through the Azalea Middle School program, we knew he had talent,” coach Fulton said, “and he ran well early on, but at the Brookings Invite, after keeping up with a group top notch runners from Arcata as a freshman, Conrad learned what HE could do, and he never let up for the rest of the season.”

This weeks selection is another great example of excelling in all aspects of the ‘Star Student Athlete’ program, volunteering for his local church, refereeing youth soccer, and expanding his horizons by studying to fly airplanes at the Brookings airport. Scholastically Conrad has balanced his athletic participation while carrying courses such Welding, Honors English, and Spanish.  “I haven’t really thought about college or what I would like study, but I do think I would like to study work in the sports fields” he told the Compass.

“Conrad’s always had goals of making personal records or lap splits,  and we look forward to having come back stronger next year. He’s a great young man to coach,” coach Fulton said, “and we’re looking forward to what he brings to the team next year”
