Brookings – Harbor School District to Delay Start of School Year – Updated

All major start dates have been pushed back one week:

The Brookings-Harbor School District will delay the start of the school year ONE WEEK for students, teachers and staff due to the Chetco Bar Fire and fire fighting operations in Curry County.

A large number of school district employees and student families have been displaced due to mandatory evacuations and concerns about safety for people, homes, livestock and pets.

The first official day for classes will now be Tuesday, Sept. 12. This includes first through fifth graders; sixth graders; ninth graders; and any new-to-the-district student in grades 7-8 or 10-12.

For returning students in grades 7 to 8 and 10 to 12, the first day of school is Wednesday, Sept. 13.

Kindergarteners official start day will be Monday, Sept. 18. (For Kindergarteners, the week of Sept. 12-15 is individual student/family appointments with their teacher for a meet-and-greet and to complete the Oregon State Assessment for Kindergartners.)

Certified New Hire Orientation for staff will be Friday, Sept. 1.

All-staff in-service will be Tuesday, Sept. 5 to Friday Sept. 8; and Monday, Sept. 11.

The annual Back-to-School Community Breakfast has been rescheduled to 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, location TBA.

Student athletes will be updated through their coaches and athletic director. Air quality is continuing to be monitored.

School Board Regular Meeting 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, Library at Kalmiopsis Elementary School.
