Bruin Boys Fall to Cascade Christian

Coach Hodges and the BHHS varsity boys basketball team ran into a tough match-up Thursday night as they hosted the 4-0 Challengers from Cascade Christian.   Again, early game rust kept the offenses to a minimum early in the game, and hustle defense kept the contest competitive early.

#10 Brad Russell had 6 points in the game.

Both teams pressed the other and the Challengers attacked every pass, frustrating the Bruin offense early, causing loose balls, early fouls, and turnovers. The Bruins got 4 players on the scoreboard in the first but could only manage 8 points as the Challengers put up 16 points in the period.

Senior Kayson Christensen #0 taking the outside jumper had 3 points on the night.

The Bruin offense just couldn’t find the basket, and the Challengers frantic hands-on defense only frustrated the Bruins more, as everything was falling Cascade Christians way early. The Bruins defense could not stop Challengers in the paint and lay-ups and second shots put Cascade Christian up 12-20 at the half.

Cascade Christian applied even more pressure in the 3rd, again, four Bruins got on the scoreboard, but could only manage 8 points in the period. High energy defense and effective hand checking produced all the offense the Challengers needed as the blew the game wide open putting up 24 points on the Bruins in the 3rd and took a commanding 20-44 lead after three periods.

Senior Oggie Badger battled in the paint all night and ended up with 5 points off of a basket and hitting 3 of 5 from the line.

The 4th quarter saw the Bruin offense score more points than they scored in the first half, putting up 13 points in the period. The Bruins Brad Russell #10 and senior Andrew Burger #32 led the way for Brookings-Harbor, each with 6 points on the night. Senior Oggie Badger #25 worked hard for his 5 points and senior Derek Tuttle had 4 points off a basket and two freethrows. But the Challengers took full advantage of the moment, putting up another 23 points on Bruins in the 4th, to take the 33-67 win.

After the game coach Hodges told the Compass “Our defense was terrible, we need to be able to stop the penetration and we were not able to execute on that tonight.” Turnover were a again a big issue” he continued, “we just didn’t shoot the ball well…Really the Trifecta, we will get back to work and get these things fixed.”
