Bruin Boys Split Double Header On the Road at Douglas

Bruin boys baseball was on the road Friday afternoon, traveling to Winston to take on the 1-4 Douglas Trojans still reeling from Bruin hurler Jason DeShon’s no-hitter in Brookings Wednesday afternoon.

The Bruins started at the plate, starting the scoring after junior Kyle Burger #5, lined a single up the middle and advanced to second and third after two passed balls before senior Jason DeShon singled scoring Burger for the games first run. Head coach Keith Wallin sent sophomore left-hander Ethan Orman, #22 to the hill for the Bruins in the first game of the days double-header, and all Orman could do was retire the side in 8 pitches striking out one.

Douglas pitching would strike out 3 Bruin batters in the top of the second inning with the Bruins leading 1-0, and the Bruin defense would reciprocate, retiring the Trojans in order after allowing a lead off walk.

The Bruin offense continued to struggle, going down in order in their half of the third inning. But the Trojan bats would catch up to Orman in the bottom of the third, stringing two doubles and a single before hitting a 2 run homer to put Douglas up 1-4.

The Bruins would start a two out rally in the fourth after sophomore Austin Dietrich #13 hit a double and advanced himself to third on a passed ball before freshman Talan Pryor, #6 would double him in and junior Seth Valliere #15, would double in two more runs to tie the game at 4-4 going into Douglas’ half of the fourth. Junior Kyle Burger, #5 relieved Orman midway through the third, and retired the side in order, striking out two on 9 pitches leaving the score 4-4 after four.

The Bruins would get their lead-off on in the top of the fifth and go on to work for 2 more runs off a single, a double and two walks to take the lead for good and take the first of two 7-5.

In the second game Douglas shut down the Bruin lead-off batters in order with two strike-outs, and then wasted no time taking an early lead in the first, putting together four singles and a double to jump out to a 5-0 lead after the first.

A Jason DeShon solo home-run would start the top of the second inning, followed by a single and a Spencer Rosenberg double, would set up junior Diego Turner to single in Rosenberg and close the gap to 3-5. However, the Trojans would add 5 more runs in the following innings, extending their lead to 5-10 going into the top of the final inning, and a late Bruin rally would fall short, giving the Trojans the 6-10 win, splitting the series 2-1 to the Bruins.

The now 5-1 Bruins travel Medford next Tuesday to take on a 6-0 Cascade Christian team coming off three decisive wins against Sutherlin, with the first pitch scheduled for 4:00pm.
