Bruin Boys Stumble at Douglas

Jess Beaman and his 3-3 Bruin boys basketball team traveled to Winston to challenge a 1-5 Douglas Trojan team that always seams to play the Bruins tough.

The Bruins broke out early with high energy defense and an offense that put 5 player in the scorebook early. Junior forward Logan Holler #33 led the way for the Bruins with two baskets and 2 of 3 from the line for 7 of the Bruins 19 points in the first. Derek Tuttle #20 hit two baskets inside as well as senior #10 Jason Vanginderen as the Bruins took a 19-15 lead into the second period.

In the second both teams began to run, anxious to keep up with the others scoring and not fall too far behind. Again Logan Holler #33 led all scorers in the period after catching fire offensively and sinking 15 of the Bruins 23 points in the period. The Trojans managed 17 points in the period, but the Bruins took a 42-32 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Bruin team that left the floor at the break, did not return for the second half. The Trojans came out with adjustments and determination, shutting down the Bruins and allowing only 8 Bruin points in the period. Bruins drove to the basket, but the shots would not fall and the Trojans weren’t sending the Bruins to the foul line. The 17 point quarter for the Trojans offense combined with the Trojan defense allowing only 8 Bruin points closed the gap to a three point 50-47 lead going into the fourth.

In the fourth the woes of the third period continued for the Bruins, who continued to run on the Trojans and take rushed shots that still refused to fall for the Bruins. The Bruin passing game was non-existent in the fourth, however junior center Derek Tuttle #10 hit twice from in the paint and senior Evan Fronckowiak #12 hit a 3 pointer. The Trojans continued driving inside and getting fouled, which got them to the line 13 times in the fourth. As time ticked away, the Trojans extended their lead as the Bruins fouled to stop the clock.

The Trojans allowed only 10 Bruin points in the fourth while scoring 20, with 10 of those 20 coming at the free throw line in the fourth, taking the lead late, dropping the Bruins 60-67.

The Bruins will be home at Bruin Arena this Friday night to take on the 5-2 Sutherlin Bulldogs at 7:30pm.
