Bruin Football Association’s Flag Football Season a Success of Smiles

The Bruin Football Association’s flag football season continues to the sounds of football on warm Wednesday afternoons. Coach Bavaro and his team of coaches and assistants have three football games going at one time, with spectators lining the fields.

The Dolphins Liam Brunick breaks away from the pack as his team-mates Hunter Demagalski, Caleb Chapman and Piper Anderson clear the way.
Coach Chris Winn

This week the Wild Coast Compass had the chance to talk with one of the programs long time coaches, Chris Winn, and we asked him what he is passing on to his players and what he takes away from the game.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have been around some great kids over the years. As they are getting older and their understanding of the game increases, each year adds more fun.

Buccaneers quarterback Amity Anderson eluding the rush as she drops back for the pass.
The Buccaneers Max Petrie bringing in the Amity Anderson pass for the completion.

Some of the kids have have really matured together over the seasons, coach Winn continued, and we are seeing their understanding of plays and concepts and implementing adjustments with input from the team.  They are seeing what worked and tweaking what didn’t, and their input has been really great.

Quarterback Owen Austin completing the pass to Viking receiver Skyler Tribur.

To me though, teaching them the x’s and o’s, the why’s and why not’s isn’t the end goal here. Sure, getting a “w” is great, but I want them all to learn the game while having fun. Keeping the fun is what let’s the love they have for the game to continue and everyone is definitely having fun. I think I might be having more fun than the kids.

The Seahawks Kole Taylor breaking away down the sideline as the Cowboy defender pulls the flag.

I can’t wait to be cheering them on when they put on blue and gold for the High School.  I will surely be smiling, as I watch them play.

The Packers Bennett Bodman tries to elude the Falcons defender as he goes for the flag.

My thanks go to Coach Bavaro for organizing this, the High School team for being the officiating crew, the parents for letting us be coaches and especially the kids for loving this game.
