Bruins Baseball Advance to 2nd Round of Play-Offs

Bruins celebrate after the final out sending into the next round of the play-offs.

A confident, relatively young Brookings-Harbor Bruins Baseball team walked onto the field Friday night against the #3 Sweet Home Huskies with a six game winning streak behind them, and their future post-season looming before them.

The stands were full, as junior Roman Worthey strode to the mound for the Bruins with the weight of many of his teammates first play-off game situations on his shoulders, and the drama started almost immediately.

Roman Worhtey #11 went 6 innings striking out 6 and collecting the win.

The visiting Huskies wasted no time jumping out in front sending eight players to the plate and scoring when the first two batters singled sending the games first run across the plate. The Bruin defense, solid leading up to this game, showed some big game nerves committing 2 errors in the top of the first and allowing the Huskies to jump in front 0-2 before the first half of the first inning would end.

After Worthy settled in to finish the top of the first getting the final two batters to strike and pop-out respectively, an eager Bruin offense stepped up to show the Huskies they were in a game. The Bruins would send six batters to the plate pressuring the Huskies into two early errors, and scoring their first run of the game when senior Jacob Racho doubled on a long fly ball over the left fielder scoring freshman speedster Payton Armentrout from 1st base. Racho would later score on a sacrifice fly by senior Cody Testa to tie the game after the first inning.

Bruin pitcher Roman Worthey would hit the first batter of the second inning and retire the next two batters he faced before another uncharacteristic error by Bruin freshman second baseman Adam Shew. That error allowed the Huskies to score again on double steal before Worthey could record the strikeout ending the top of the second with Sweet Home leading 2-3.

Huskie starting pitcher Fisher Anderson held the Bruin batters in check in the bottom half of the second inning retiring the Bruins in order sending the Huskies back to the plate leading 2-3 after two innings of play.

Again the Huskies threatened loading the bases, but the Bruin defense would not let the Huskies score when a Sweet Home mistake on the basepaths would result in Worthey tagging out a runner at the plate to end the threat and the inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Bruins broke out sending eight players to the plate. Putting together three hits including a Jacob Racho double and two singles by Jacub McCollum and Payton Armentrout respectively Brooking-Harbor scored two more times, taking a 5-3 lead into the fourth inning.

Both teams retired their sides in order in the fourth and Worthey would retire the Huskies in order in the top of the fifth. Defense would dominate the rest of the game with neither team mounting any offensive threats going into the top of the 7th inning.

Leading 5-3 in the top of the 7th the Bruins only needed to retire the side to secure the win and advance themselves into the second round of the playoffs. Coach Wallin had Adam Shew relieve Worthey to finish the game and after a double play and an infield grounder, the Bruins took the win 5-3 advancing themselves into the next round.

Roman Worthey collected the win for the Bruins going 6 innings allowing only 5 hits and striking out 6. As a team, the Bruins scored 5 runs off of 6 hits and committed 3 errors in the victory.

The Bruins will be on the road for their next play-off challenge against the Gladstone Gladiators in Clackamas next Wednesday, May 23rd at 5:00 pm.
