After defeating the Sweet Home Huskies last Friday evening, the Bruin varsity baseball team was tasked with traveling to Clackamus Wednesday for an afternoon contest against the 19-8 Gladstone Gladiators of the 4A-2 Tri-Valley Conference.

The Bruin offense stepped up to the plate in the top of the first and faced senior pitcher Ben McCoy who retired the side in order striking out two and getting the third to ground out.

The Bruins started freshman Adam Shew on the mound and a Gladiator offensive team that went on a 14 game winning streak during their league play came out swinging and jumped out early on the Bruin defense. Gladstone sent 8 batters to the plate in the inning scoring four runs and took an early 0-4 lead.

In the Bruins top of the second, again Galdstone shut the Bruin bats down in order, keeping Brookings-Harbor off the basepaths.

In Gladstones offensive half of the second inning, junior Bruin pitcher Roman Worthey was brought in in relief of Adam Shew and returned the favor retiring the Gladiators in order, getting the Bruin bats back to the plate.

Senior Bruin catcher Cody Testa saving the passed ball.

However, Gladiator pitcher Ben McCoy continued to dominate the Bruin bats in the top of the 3rd sending Bruin batters back to the bench in order once again.

It wouldn’t be until the Bruins offensive half of the 4th inning that freshman Payton Armentrout recorded the Bruins first hit of the game. Senior Cody Testa followed that hit up with one of his own before Gladstone shut down the Bruin rally.

The Bruins played strong defense throughout the rest of the game after the 1st inning committing no errors in the contest, but the Gladstone pitcher dominated, throwing a complete game.

Despite the Gladiators defense committing 2 errors on the day, the Bruin offense just could not group hits together to mount a cohesive offensive attack that would put pressure on the Gladiator pitcher or their defensive team.

The 19-9 Brookings-Harbor Bruin baseball teams season came to an end on the Gladiators home field in a game in which they could not recover from an early four-run lead.

Congratulations to Coach Wallin and his entire staff, and to this group of young men who truly left it all on the field.
