Bruins Fall to St. Mary’s in Defensive Battle

Friday night featured a match-up of heavy hitters on the football field as the 6-0 BHHS Bruins traveled to Medford to match up with the St. Mary’s Crusaders. The Crusaders, coming off a 26-49 loss after being dominated by the Hidden Valley Mustangs, were determined to outscore the Bruins and get their season back on track.

After winning the toss, the Bruins deferred and kicked to the Crusaders. It did not take long to identify the St. Mary’s game plan as they featured the run game. But the Bruin defense who has been solid all year, stood them up on their first drive and forced a 3rd and 10 situation. The Crusader quarterback dropped back and threw a pass that was tipped and the intercepted by Bruin defensive back Jason DeShon late in the first period.

The Bruins would not be able to capitalize on the turn-over, and early in the 2nd period the Crusaders made them pay. St. Mary’s sustained a long drive and with just seconds left in the 1st quarter, the Crusader quarterback dropped back and threw a 30 yard touchdown into the right corner putting the Crusader’s up 0-7 after the 1st quarter.

The Crusaders would score again in early moments of the 2nd period on a 70 yard run to the endzone. A flag would be thrown that would be picked up with no explanation for a St. Mary’s touchdown.

The Bruins now facing a 0-14 deficit with minutes left in the 2nd period would put together a drive down inside the the 10 yard line that would stall just outside the endzone. Logan Holler #11 came in and got the Bruins on the board 3-14 at the half.

The Bruins defense came out in the second half and adjusted to the St. Mary’s attack stopping the run and keeping the Crusaders off the scoreboard in the second half. The Bruin offensive line just could not keep the Crusaders defense out of the Bruin backfield disrupting plays through out the game. Brookings-Harbor worked themselves into scoring opportunities but could not get the ball into the endzone and the Bruins dropped their first game of the 2019 season 3-14.

“The kids were relentless today, battled 4 quarters and showed huge improvement against a solid team.” said Coach Bavoaro after the game. “We missed some reads and some throws that could have kept us in the game.” “Hats off to them, they made the extra plays and got the win” “Now we turn our focus to Cascade Christian.., its Senior night and the team has a lot to play for.” he went on to say.

The Bruins will be at home next week taking on the Cascade Christian Challengers who will be coming off of a 50-2 win over Douglas at 7:00pm at Bruin stadium.
