Coast Guard Rescues 3, 2 Perish after Vessel Capsizes Off Umpqua River Bar

On Sunday morning, September 26th, just before 9:30am, the U.S. Coast Guard Station Umpqua River received reports of a capsized vessel just outside the Umpqua River Bar.

A Motor Lifeboat Crew and an MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Sector North Bend were immediately dispatched and initial reports were of a recreational 22-foot pleasure craft and that 5 people were in the water.

A rescue swimmer was deployed from the helicopter and three were recovered, however, a 5 year old girl and middle aged woman remained trapped in the cabin. The rescue swimmer was able to get to the two individuals in the vessel, but both were unresponsive and life saving procedures were initiated.

The woman and child did not recover, and the identities of those involved and vessel have not been released.
