Elderly Man Dies After Being Struck by Road Painting Vehicle

On Sunday, October 9th, information regarding a pedestrian being struck by a paint striping truck on Pacific View Drive in Brookings, was received by the Curry County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch from the Brookings Police Department at about 4:00pm late Sunday afternoon.

As Curry County Sheriff’s Office Dispatched a Sheriff’s Deputy, the Brookings Police Department advised that a Brookings Police officer was currently on scene.

During the initial investigation, the Sheriff’s Deputy learned that the truck and crew involved that were doing paint striping on the roadway, were Hicks Striping and Curbing out of Salem, Or., and contracted by the Curry County Road Department.

While painting stripes on a section of the roadway, the driver of the striping truck encountered a man and a woman near the edge of their driveway and when the truck got close, the male resident, identified as 73 year old Chester Leonhardt, was run over after stumbling forward and falling in front of the paint striping truck.

Leonhardt was on the ground alert and talking before being transported to Sutter Coast Hospital. Leonhardt’s life partner, 73year old Margaret Dill, was present at the scene when the accident happened and the Sheriff’s Office was able to collect video footage of the accident from a neighbor’s security camera.

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office was notified later Sunday evening that Leonhardt has died of his injuries.
