Governor Browns Mandates Begin as Cases and Resistance Grow

Governor Brown made news by making Oregon the first state to reintroduce outdoor mask mandates. Beginning Friday, August 27th, an outdoor mask mandate went into effect, mandating that masks will be required in most public outdoor settings, regardless of vaccination status, where physical distancing is not possible.   

Through August 27th, the Oregon Health Authority has identified just under 9,539 COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough cases according to Thursdays Oregon Health Authority report. The Delta variant also continues to rise hitting 1,331 individuals.

Vaccination rates for the state slowed even further in the past week as the state sat at 70.9% vaccinated last week, and to date, now sits at 71.3% an increase of .4% in the past week. Oregon Health Authority, said Friday, July 17th, that the fully vaccinated are well protected from COVID, including the delta variant.

As of Friday, August, 20th, the state of Oregon had tested 6,227,854 individuals, an increase of 154,419 individuals and now over 1,938,414 more people than the states 4,289,440 population. 5,849,938 have tested negative for the novel COVID-19 virus and 377,916 have tested positive. Oregon has recorded 15,424 new cases in the past week, and 268,401 total cases. Individuals hospitalized rose by 840 hospitalizations statewide in the past week, and now stands at 14,529. In the past week 103 deaths were recorded statewide, and Oregonians who have unfortunately succumbed to COVID-19 has now reached 3,115 in the entire state since the pandemic began.

Curry County’s latest numbers as reported Friday, August 27th, by the Oregon Health Authority, now reports testing 17,504 individuals with 16,157 negative tests, 1,347 total positive COVID-19 tests and the latest data from the Oregon Health Authority and has recorded 1,297 total cases and 14 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Del Norte County Department of Health and Human Services reported adding 358 new cases in the past week now reaching 2,805 total confirmed cases reported by Public Health, with 318 active cases, 22 current hospitalizations and 22 deaths.

Coos County to the north, reported testing 64,362 individuals last week with 60,698 negative results, adding 271 new cases in the past week with now 3,664 total positive cases and 50 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Josephine County has seen significant increases in recent weeks and has reported testing 115,666 individuals with 105,942 negative results, 9,724 total positive test results with now 6,915 total cases of COVID-19 and now 106 deaths.

Jackson County, which includes the Medford area, with a total population of 221,290, reports testing 316,591 individuals, 95,301 more people than the counties total population, with 290,034 negative test results, 26,557 positive results, and 17,743 total cases of COVID-19 with now 199 deaths as of Friday, August 27th.
