Heat and Smoke Update – 8/27/2017

As of Saturday evening, the Chetco Bar fire has charred 105,518 acres and continues to be zero percent contained.

On Saturday evening, August 26th, 2017, the National Weather Service issued an update regarding the RED FLAG WARNING from Friday evening for gusty winds and poor humidity recoveries. The National Weather Service stated that the RED FLAG WARNING will remain in effect from 1:00PM until 9:00PM Sunday, August 27th, and will resume again on Monday, August 28th, 2017 from 1:00PM until 9:00PM.

Officials continued stating that dry, unstable and locally breezy conditions are expected into early next week as a dry unstable air mass will move over the area the rest of weekend and into early next week. Northeast winds could be locally gusty but are expected to ease Sunday and Monday.

Due to Northeast winds drifting smoke Southwesterly, Gold Beach, Brookings-Harbor and into Northern California, coastal communities will see smoke reaching the unhealthy and very unhealthy ranges Sunday into Monday. Coastal communities west of the Chetco Bar Fire should expect reduced visibility along Highway 101.

Temperatures will rise to between 70 and 80 degrees from Gold Beach to Brookings-Harbor,10 to 15 degrees above normal. Heavy smoke will likely accompany much of this heat, keeping temperatures lower than they would be with clear skies, but conditions will still be hot. Individuals should stay cool in a filtered, air conditioned building, and stay hydrated with non-sugary drinks. Elderly, children, and those with lung and heart problems are most at risk for health issues.
