Hwy. 101 Remains Closed at Last Chance Grade

Inclement weather conditions and continued slide activity closed Hwy. 101 at Last Chance Grade again Friday as debris from the steep saturated terrain continues to slide.

Hwy. 101 remains closed Saturday after CalTrans workers relentlessly try to clear the roadway once again. On Friday afternoon another large amount of rock, mud and trees covered the roadway prompting a message from CalTrans that Hwy. 101 may not open until this weekend sometime.

Last Chance Grade, Hwy. 101

The California Highway Patrol continues to warn travelers to avoid attempting to circumvent the slide with alternate routes as Hwy. 96 has sustained a massive slide closing the highway as of Thursday, and requires the removal of an estimated 30,000 cubic yards of material needs to be cleared from the roadway.

State Route 96 remains closed, approximately 4 miles west of Happy Camp

The higher passes have accumulated snow and ice on the roadway and have resulted in stranded motorists.
