Lady Bruins Varsity Basketball Tip-Off Season

Coach Chris Schofield’s Lady Bruins Varsity Basketball squad took to the floor and started their season off in first round play at the Yreka Miner Invitational tournament against the Mt. Shasta Bears.

Both teams came out a bit slow, out of sync and evenly matched. The first period proved to be a struggle as both teams fought through the offseason rust, missing shots and making assignment mistakes. But the Lady Bruins would outscore the Bears 7-5 at the end of the period.

The second period was much of the same with both teams missing layups and fighting to create any continuity on defense. The Mt. Shasta Bears would turn the tables in the 2nd period and better the Lady Bruins 12-10 and go into the halftime break tied at 17 apiece.

However, the 3rd period would be a different story as the Bears came out hitting their outside shots. The Lady Bruins seemed to dominate the inside under the hoop but just could not control rebounds while giving up the long rebounds creating second-chance opportunities for Mt. Shasta.

The Lady Bruins would only score 3 points in the third period as Mt. Shasta’s shooting guard began hitting 3 pointers putting the Bears up 29-20 at the end of the period.

Brookings-Harbor would outscore the Bears in the fourth period 12 to 9, but double-digit turnovers just getting the ball in play from their own end would allow Mt. Shasta to score just enough to hold off the Lady Bruins and ultimately win the game with a final score of 38 to 32.

The Lady Bruins play in second play today at 1:00 pm.
