Lady Bulldogs Powerful Offense Challenges Bruin Girls Monday

Head coach Brian Carlson’s struggling Bruins varsity girls soccer team hosted their second consecutive home game Monday afternoon coming off a 0-0 tie last Monday afternoon against the #22 ranked St. Mary’s Lady Crusaders.

Things didn’t get any easier for the Bruin girls Monday afternoon with the #3 ranked Sutherlin Lady Bulldogs stepping off the bus undefeated so far this season, to challenge the Bruin girls at home.

The Bruin girls defense held their own early against the potent Lady Bulldog offense who came into the game with 35 goals in their previous 6 games.

Senior Rockette Marrington, #13, disrupted early Sutherlin attacks and the middle of the defense was fortunate to have senior Marissa Scott back on the field after missing Monday’s match-up against the Lady Crusaders.

The Bruin offense struggled to get shots on goal in the first half and when the field became extended, the Lady Bulldogs controlled the gap in front of the Bruin girls defense, allowing shots to get through to goalkeeper Dakota Greenwood.

The Lady Bulldogs would find the back of the net first, 27:00 minutes into the first half of play, breaking down the left side and working her way to a one on one situation against the goal keeper before hitting the corner of the net across the face of the goal to take a 0-1 Sutherlin lead before the half-time break.

A stubborn Bruin girls team came out in the second half and kept the field short, keeping the Sutherlin offense from developing offensive attacks. But again, as the half progressed and Sutherlin relaxed their defensive trap, the field became extended once again, allowing the Lady Bulldogs to hold on to the ball longer and make more accurate attacks.

An open shot at the top of the box would find the back of the net 14:00 minutes into the second half giving the Lady Bulldogs a comfortable 0-2 lead. The Bruin girls would attack relentlessly, pushing players to the offensive half of the field, and ultimately a fast break opportunity for Sutherlin would put the game out of reach late in the second half, before the Bruin girls would score to make the final score 1-3, Lady Bulldogs.

The Bruin girls are on the road Thursday afternoon at 4:00pm, to take on the #24 ranked Cascade Christian Lady Challengers who will coming off a 1-9 loss to Lakeview and a 3 game losing streak.
