Lady Panthers Take Win on the Road in Brookings to Even Season Rivalry at 1-1

Coach Schofield and the BHHS Lady Bruin basketball team hosted their Hwy. 101 rival to the north, the Gold Beach Lady Panthers Friday evening, who were looking to return the favor to the Lady Bruins who took the win in their last meeting at Gold Beach before Christmas.

Junior guard Zoe Carlson #11, led all Lady Bruin scorers with 14 points from a 3 pointer, two baskets and hitting 5 of 6 from the free throw line.

A determined Lady Panther team attacked the Lady Bruins early, pressuring the Lady Bruins out of their own back court, forcing early turnovers and putting the Lady Bruins behind, trailing 2-10 mid-way through the first period. The Lady Panthers continued the pressure, holding onto a 8-17 advantage after one period of play.

After putting four players in the scoring column in the first quarter, and allowing 17 Lady Panther points, the Lady Bruins tightened their defense in the second period, and closing the Lady Panther lead to 12-18 half way through the period. Applying soft pressure, the Lady Bruins clawed their way back into the game holding Gold Beach to just 3 points off of free throws in the period.

Junior Ashley Schofield #44, putting the inside shot up off the glass, had 6 points on the night.
The Lady Bruins junior center Marissa Scott #15, had 5 points in the game.

The Lady Panthers held a 16-20 lead at the half-time break, but the Lady Bruins could not contain the Gold Beach offense, who turned the tables in the third period, hitting for 12 points and holding the Lady Bruins to just 5 points in the period. Stretching their lead back to 11 points at the mid-way point of the third period, Gold Beach took away the inside game of the Lady Bruins, collapsing in the paint, challenging shots while not allowing second shot opportunities.

Senior Faith Burton #4, down low, getting 2 of her 3 points in the game.

The Lady Bruins turned up the defensive pressure to start the final period, but the Lady Panthers 11 point lead was just too much late as the Lady Panthers senior point guard Kailina Hamilton #10 scored 9 points after hitting a 3 pointer and going 4 for 4 from the line in the final period. Lady Bruin forward, junior Zoe Carlson #11 hit a 3 pointer for the Lady Bruins and went 2 for 2 from the line, however, the Lady Panthers held on to their lead to finish the game with the win and split the Hwy. 101 rivalry with the Lady Bruins 1-1.

Both teams exchanged wins on the road this season with the Lady Bruins taking the first game 43-33 back on December 20th in Gold Beach, and the Lady Panthers taking the win Friday night 43-30 in Brookings.

The Lady Bruins had no answer for Gold Beach point guard, senior Kailina Hamilton #10, who led all scorers in the game with 29 points after hitting five 3 pointers, and going 8 for 8 from the line.

The Lady Bruins and the Lady Panthers both will see their first league action next week with the Lady Panthers traveling to Waldport Tuesday, and the Lady Bruins traveling to Cascade Christian next Friday, after hosting Hidden Valley Monday.
