On Monday, January 8, 2017, Monique Kelley, (Kevin Mayo’s older sister and daughter of Chris and Kibby Mayo) while on her way home to Bend, OR, hit an ice patch in the road causing her SUV to roll several times. Monique was partially ejected from the vehicle and her spine was severely injured. Monique had her five-year-old son Kamden with her in the car who is miraculously uninjured.

Kamden was able to free himself and bravely tried to help his Mother who was pinned underneath the vehicle. After about 30 minutes they were found by a passing vehicle. Monique was taken to a Klamath Falls hospital and was later transported by air to OHSU hospital in Portland Oregon. She was rushed into emergency spinal surgery where surgeons were able to stabilize her spine with metal rods from the t5 to t9 vertebrae, removing the shattered t5 vertebrae.

Due to her injuries, she is now paralyzed from the chest down. Monique is a single parent raising her 5-year-old son. She is a very proud and humble new businesswoman in Bend, OR, exercising her skills in cosmetology, barbering, lash extensions and more with a loyal clientele.

Money raised via this gofundme account will be used to fund expenses related to transitioning Monique throughout this long journey ahead of her, purchasing necessary adaptive equipment for newly paraplegic individuals, such as a wheelchair, a handicap accessible vehicle, and necessary home modifications to accommodate her special needs and provide for her young five-year-old son.

Funds are also needed as her immediate family is traveling to Portland Oregon from Southern Oregon, Central California, and Hawaii to provide emotional and physical support to her and her son during the upcoming weeks and months of her journey to stability and recovery.
