ODFW Closes Crabbing in Southern Oregon

Test results from crab viscera samples collected from Bandon to the Oregon/California border on February 11th indicate domoic acid is again elevated in the southern Oregon area.

ODFW and Oregon Dept. of Agriculture are immediately designating the area Bandon to the Oregon/California border (Harvest Areas J, K and L) as a Biotoxin Management Zone and implementing an evisceration order for all crab harvested from the zone on or after February 14, 2019. In addition, authorities are implementing a recall for whole or live crab that was harvested from Area 50-K only (Cape Blanco to Gold Beach) from February 11th, 2019 through February 13th, 2019.

For detailed evisceration instructions, testing results and schedules, please see the ODA’s website here https://www.oregon.gov/ODA/programs/FoodSafety/Shellfish/Pages/CrabBiotoxinInfo.aspx.

Testing for domoic acid will continue on approximately a weekly basis to determine if and when the evisceration order can be lifted.

The recreational fishery in this area is now closed.
