Oregon Sees COVID-19 Decrease for Second Straight Week

With over six months of what now appears to be arbitrary social distancing mandates, Oregon saw fewer cases of COVID-19 for its second consecutive week.

As the state and country prepare for the 2020-2021 school year, with again what seems subjective guidance, parents, students and teachers all struggle to formulate a system that is a safe learning environment for students from elementary schools to college institutions.

Governor Brown’s August 7th face covering mandate requiring face masks, face shields and face coverings for offices and indoor public spaces when physical distancing is not possible remains in effect including children 5 years old and older while local businesses continue to struggle and parents and students look to start a new school year.

Although Oregon as a state has had fewer COVID-19 cases, Jackson County officials declared an ‘outbreak’ primarily related to a local food manufacturing facility earlier in the week, and has now been placed on Governor Brown’s COVID-19 ‘watch list’.

Oregon saw a slow of COVID-19 cases in the last 7 days with 160 fewer cases statewide than the previous week adding just 1,856 new cases as of Friday, August 21st. Again the the 5 northern Oregon counties of Clackamas, Marion, Multnomah, Umatilla, and Washington, continue to comprise 70% of all of the state of Oregon’s cases reporting 16,728 of the states 24,421 total COVID-19 cases.

Curry County reported that it now has 6 active cases of COVID-19 while the county has reported testing 1,197 individuals, with 1,177 negative tests, with 14 recovered cases and 0 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic as of Friday, August 21st.

Del Norte County Department of Health and Human Services reported testing 6,803 individuals with 166 confirmed cases up 10 since last week. 2 new positive cases were reported to Public Health, bringing the total amount of active cases to 14 with 3 hospitalizations and 1 death.

Humboldt County to the south of Del Norte County reports testing 20,365 individuals adding 36 new cases in the past week now with 345 total cases, 64 active cases, 277 recoveries, 21 hospitalizations and 4 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic as of Friday, August 21st.

Coos County to the north, reported testing 4,900 individuals with 4,839 negative tests, 94 total positive cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, with 21 recoveries and 0 deaths.

Josephine County reports testing 8,234 individuals with 8,109 negative results, 149 total positive cases of COVID-19 of which 85 are recovered cases, and 2 deaths.

Jackson County went into the week testing 22,925 individuals with 22,350 negative test results, adding 118 new cases since last week and now totaling 654 total cases of COVID-19, with 198 recovered cases and 2 deaths as of Friday August 21st.
