OSP Officer Helps Rescue Doomed Bull Elk

Sr. Trooper Sharp responded to a report from the Union Pacific Railroad regarding a bull elk caught in an old communication line. It was apparent that the elk was unable to get out. The location was in a remote area along Meacham Creek.

Sr. Trooper Sharp met up with a Union Pacific Railroad employee, who was able to show the Trooper the exact location of the elk. They initially attempted to cut the bull free, but could not safely do so.

Sr. Trooper Sharp then contacted Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist Rimbach, who was able to respond to the scene with a tranquilizer. Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Brown came to assist.

The elk was successfully sedated, which allowed him to be cut free from the wires. The elk recovered and appeared to be in great shape.
