Police Kill Cougar Roaming City for Week

Late Sunday the Medford Police Department responded to a report that a cougar was sighted near a heavily populated area of E. Barnett Rd and N. Riverside Ave. Multiple officers responded to the area and attempted to contain the animal, ensuring public safety while an action plan was developed.

Oregon Department Fish and Wildlife and Oregon State Police Fish and Game Troopers were contacted, however, they were not able to assist. Based on the heavy pedestrian foot traffic, the proximity to people and patrons of neighboring businesses, and it being observed in the same area on multiple occasions; the decision was made to dispatch the animal.

The cougar was contained to the east side of the Sovana Inn when it was dispatched. The cougar was found to be female and weighed approximately 80-100 pounds. It was transported to Oregon State Police in Central Point where it will be later turned over to Oregon Department Fish and Wildlife by Fish and Game Troopers.

The Medford Police would everyone to know that this decision was not made lightly. Dispatching an animal is always our last resort.
